Terreiro da Luta
Leaving Pico Areiro, in the direction of the mountains, passing through a dense forest of mimosas trees, reaching this impressive hillside monument, which overlooks the whole bay of Funchal. It consists of a massive monument of the Virgin Maria, lady of peace. The monument was created in 1927. It is over 5 mts (17 ft) high and weighs 20 ton.
Pico do Arieiro Tour uphill heading for Pico Arieiro, 1818m (5965 fts). It is the third highest peak in Madeira. As you climb, the green woodland gives way to bare rock. There are tremendous views over an endless succession of knife-edge ridges and sheer cliffs. Cotton-wool clouds hang in the valleys. After leaving the peak Arieiro, heading home, we enjoy the enormous Madeira junipers tree which has become quite rare over the years.
The tour heads north towards the thick laurel forest. “Ribeiro Frio” is a delightful spot set among the Laurissilva forest This Forest is classified in the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1999. Here the fresh clean cold water of the Ribeiro Frio ( meaning cold river) are channelled into series of deep pools to create a small trout farm. Ribeiro Frio is also the meeting point of several levada walks.
Surrounded by the mountains in the North and the ocean in the south in Funchal amphitheatre, the botanical garden of Madeira is about 3km (1.86 miles) from the city centre. It has 8 hectares in area, 5 of which are gardens where you can admire about 3000 species of plants from several places in the world. 200 of these, being endemic species from macaronesea and some growing exclusively in Madeira. It has a rich collection from different floras containing in total over 15000 specimens. At the end of the Madeira Boticanal garden there is an area devoted to exotic birds with a collection of 300 rare birds.
